Richard has nearly 30 years’ experience in the information industry, across scientific publishing and library automation. He works across metadata, discovery, analytics and FOLIO, an open-source library services platform, using technology to improve library services and create meaningful workflows.
Mutali Lithole
E-research specialist – University of Johannesburg
Mutali focuses on institutional repositories and research data management, helping ensure research is accessible and impactful. She is passionate about supporting researchers and postgraduate students to publish, preserve and increase the visibility of their work through open access.
Adam Snook
Principal technical consultant – OpenAthens
With nearly 18 years at OpenAthens, Adam brings deep expertise in libraries and identity and access management. He designs solutions that help organisations improve user and customer experiences.
Tania Pemberton
Head of enablement – Oxford University Press
Tania has over 20 years’ experience in information services, working across publishing, knowledge management and library-focused SaaS. She focuses on smarter discovery, user needs and information-led transformation, and believes great questions are at the heart of meaningful change.
Richard French
Product manager – OpenAthens
Richard brings user insight, expertise and strategic thinking in access and authentication to shape OpenAthens for library customers. He ensures libraries and their patrons enjoy a seamless access experience.
David Leffler
Discovery & access librarian – Jerry Falwell Library
In 2024, David served as a Fulbright Specialist in Uzbekistan, helping modernize library systems. He brings global insight, innovative approaches and expertise in improving discovery and access.
Jonathan Eaton
Senior content & systems manager – London Business School
Jonathan is a library technologist, data scientist and programmer with decades of experience. He supports teaching, research and online learning at London Business School and has used OpenAthens for over 25 years, since 1997.
Sarah Underwood

Research to reality: Sarah turns user challenges into real solutions, simplifying complex systems through prototyping and collaboration so users can navigate them clearly and easily.

Library & collection lead (discovery & access) – Swansea University
Andrew has worked at Swansea University for over 25 years and leads the library’s digital services. His current focus includes the adoption of AI in libraries and improving everyday processes and ways of working.
Emma Wilson-Shaw
E-resource manager – OpenAthens
Emma has 20+ years’ experience in UK academic libraries, across higher education, further education and special collections. As OpenAthens’ e-Resource Manager, she works with libraries, publishers and service providers to make the user journey to content seamless.
Michael Smith
Senior marketing officer – OpenAthens
Michael joined OpenAthens in 2022 with a background in Spanish, French and marketing. He supports OpenAthens globally, working with partners and customers on key industry topics.
Phil Sykes
Regional sales manager – EBSCO
Phil brings 17 years of experience in publishing and information, 13 with EBSCO. He manages the North-West and Yorkshire, supporting corporate, medical and academic customers across EBSCO’s full product portfolio.
