Q. Is IP proxy recognition as secure as federated SSO?

Answer...

No. IP proxy recognition is less secure than federated SSO. IP-based access relies on network location rather than verifying each user, so it is harder to confirm who is accessing resources, revoke access quickly or investigate misuse.

Federated SSO uses institutional login via identity providers (such as Microsoft Entra ID or Google Workspace) and authenticates each user individually. OpenAthens can also provide remote, secure and seamless access without the need for VPNs or proxy.

Why federated SSO is more secure:

  • Secure remote access with no VPNs or proxy servers required
  • Privacy-preserving by default using anonymised identifiers
  • Better audit trails and stronger access control
  • Faster removal of access when users leave
